There are traditions handed down with pride and passion from generation to generation. This is the case of the Albertario family of Milan, a dynasty in the world of leather goods for over a century for their talent and careful, meticulous attention paid to each step of their work to the choices of materials used an essential creed.
It was in 1895 when the current owner’s great-uncle opened a modest little shop along the Navigli, the waterways that once dotted the city of Milan, now reduced to a few limited areas. Here, between hides, scissors and rudimentary sewing machines were created small coin purses designed to hold silver pennies. Years pass, alternate generations, then came the terrible tragedy of the Second World War to upset the daily habits of all. The Albertario Family made virtue out of necessity; in a time when it was difficult to find raw materials, they created the “magic wallet”, a cardboard object, wrapped only in leather with rubber bands to hold banknotes and papers that could be opened on several sides (hence the name “magic”). And now, all these years later, that model with appropriate changes and embellishments to meet the needs of modern man is still being made today.
In the years after the war, Albertario is inextricably linked with Gucci and other big fashion brands, for which they manufactured high-end products. But it was with Davide, the last heir of the family tradition that Albertario strengthened the desire to face the market with their own collections, rethinking and recreating the family traditions. Alongside the wallets, bags, and trollies, even more unusual items followed, which however share with the production of their classic pieces, a sophisticated extreme of embodiment. Going in the direction of jet helmets for motorcyclists, covered in fine leathers (calf, but also python and crocodile) that, once off the bike, can be worn as a practical shoulder bag using the appropriate applicable. Even a typical baseball cap for Albertario becomes an exclusive fashion item if made with shark skin. The same wallets, both for men and women, are constantly being rethought in their design and combination of leathers and colours.
The entire Albertario production is carried out at their new workshop in Opera, a small town south of Milan. Twenty skilled workers sew, dye and turn rolls of leather into the purest examples of Italian handicraft traditions. Davide himself, puts aside his sleek, elegant jacket of ordinance for a more humble work apron and with his dexterity and passion to create something new every day works along side. As he says, “You must love this work, if you want to give “life” and “identity” to your products.”
Today, the Albertario brand can be found throughout the world and particular in the Far East, where it has carved a niche of loyal enthusiasts. In addition to retail shops and e-commerce, their products can also be admired directly in the lavish showroom in Opera.
